My utter enjoyment of the television hit Supernatural continues on from my last review, but this time we jump all the way to the very end of the fifth season, so keep in mind, there are spoilers ahead. For this review, we are taking a look at the 22nd episode of the fifth season of the show Supernatural Directed by Robert Singer, and created by Eric Kripke. This episode is called Swan Song and aired May 13th, 2010. One of the reasons this episode in particular stands out is the mixture of pure badassness and strength that the characters portray within this episode. It kept me interested the entire time.

We get this feeling of badassness within the first two minutes of the episode, when Chuck (Rob Benedict), who is a prophet of God, is writing about Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. Sam and Dean drive one car throughout the entire show, the car is a staple. Chuck writes “this 1967 Chevy Impala would turn out to be the most important object in pretty much the whole universe.” This line suggests how important their work is and how much they matter to the entire world. It starts the episode off with a sense of majesty and grandeur, we get the sense that Sam and Dean are more important than you even know and that something big is going to happen in the traditional Supernatural way.

Lucifer, also known as the Devil has been set free from his “cage” which is a place deeper than hell, that holds Lucifer like a prison. The brothers want to send Lucifer back to the cage but the only way they can do it is by letting him posses Sam which not only would be torture alone, but being put into the cage for all of eternity would be even worse. Sam is willing to do it for mankind and to stop the apocalypse from happening. This shows courage and sacrifice and some real badassness. It makes me think of the old fashioned hero who is willing to risk it all to save someone. When they confront Lucifer the first time, he is in a dark room, staying calm and cool throughout the whole scene. It almost chilling at how confident that he is. It suggests he already knows what is going to happen. When he possesses Sam, Sam is not able to control Lucifer and disappears to an unknown location.

We see the archangel Michael and Lucifer squaring up to have a major battle to determine the fate of the world, and we cut to the dashboard of the Impala and see a tape pressed into the radio and we hear the song “Rock of Ages” by Def Leopard as Dean slowly drives up onto the two of them. As he gets out of the car, he says “Howdy boys… sorry am I interrupting something?”. This in a sense shows a lack of respect or fear for the two celestial beings who are immensely powerful. We see this power when he snaps his fingers and makes an angel named Castiel explode for setting Micheal on fire.

The final act of courage within the fantastic episode is when Sam takes control of his body for one last ditch effort to save the world. He opens up the portal to the cage and slowly falls in pulling Michael in with him sealing Lucifer back in the cage and stopping the apocalypse. It is the type of action on screen that makes us hope that when out time comes to do something brave, we all have the courage too.
